This Is Not Unstick #2
...not that anyone cares, I don't think, which I don't mean bitterly or anything 'cause the Unstick series is probably gonna be some rough going and who wants rough going on their internet music writing, like nobody right, what people mainly want is a link to the actual music so they can just judge for themselves, I have seen it opined that this bold new technology obviates the need for critique of any kind, an assertion which further cemented my belief that people are getting stupider not just every day but approximately every five minutes
nevertheless one can sometimes kinda see the point of such dudes as say dumb shit like that, and indeed more than sometimes if you listen to a lot of music with hooks because what is there to say about a hook that hasn't already been said & said to death, we would be running out of adjectives if we hadn't run out of them a long time ago, there are only so many ways to say "catchy" innit amirite, one of them is "memorable" and another is "infectious" and both of them are all worn out, I have to invoke the sacred comma splice even to keep up my own interest in the subject
some people who like music writing talk about framing the dialogue, phrases like that, but the dark truth lurking at the heart of the"just let me hear the MUSIC" position is that there is no dialogue, none whatsoever, this truth runs across and through all current rhetorical strata: music & the rest of the arts, politics (where the impossibility of hearing what the other fellow has to say seems to have taken on a priori status, conveniently excusing the speaker from even trying), culture if you can separate it from politics, I would place a pretty hefty wager that it runs as deep as the family/home/couple/individual level: that the primacy of experience as end-all and of the first impression as not only possessing validity but as the sole repository & source of valid response has now become pervasive
in such a rhetorical/political/cultural environment several things happen to music: it multiplies like bacteria on a warm sponge, and it becomes harder to hear
it is manifestly the case that however anxious many defenders of metal may be to compare a given strain of metal (usually black) to classical romanticism, they cannot do so & make sense at the same time, because enthusiasm for a concept isn't the same thing as kinship with that concept
however it is further the case that there is a sort of kinship which we can trace, and which when traced describes or outlines the very cultural alienation that makes great metal possible, resuscitating the need for some kind of written response with which not to frame dialogue but describe the monologue we hear, if only for own clarity's sake, neat trick eh
I actually came here to say "check out the new year of desolation album and don't miss the bonus track" but as it turns out this actually was Unstick #2 PWN3D 4 GRAET JUSTICE!!1! lol heeeeeere, fishy fishy fishy w/b
