More regulation is clearly necessary.  Paulson proposed elimination of a patchwork regime with a more powerful agency.  Democrats will probably add more authority to the agency than Paulson initially outlined, Bush will threaten the veto, and it'll go to the next President with both sides claiming an action mandate.  Ideally for the Republicans, Bush can present an untenable plan, threaten a veto on anything else as being "big government" or "against the American spirit of entrepreneurship", and go into the election being able to run "Democrats don't care about the housing crisis" ads.

Holla.

Of course the report is stretching quite a bit--one banking admin contacts another doesn't constitute 'contemplating Nordic-style takeovers', and this ultimately has precisely 0% chance of happening.  This combined with that 'Dem Aristocracy Considers Gore for Nomination' piece Mesmerize posted makes me think that the Telegraph has a lazy and sensationalist staff, more than anything else.

Still, the prospect of bank nationalizations gives me wood, old Stalinist that I am.

Did you see their new gmail feature?  It allows you to pick the date your e-mail's received on, including dates that have already happened.  There are only ten such e-mails allowed per user, though, so as not to mess with the time-stream too much.  Still, though, not a bad feature.  I guess they must have used css or ajax or something.

The Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) Bertie Ahern is to resign on May 6th.

Okay, it's not on the level of Franco dying, but I'm delighted all the same.  He has been dogged by allegations of corruption, misappropriation of political funds and political cronyism for the last couple of years and more, but it seems he has finally realised it's time to go.

And I want the world to know.

How come every time I read my news aggregator or switch on CNN there are hell of stories about autism? Just within the past couple days. Was there some kind of advance in the medicine?

Seriously, like why does CNN all of a sudden think I need to know about Jenny McCarthy and her son's battle with autism? I don't!

Well I hear they were going to use the "Autsim vomits over mother's sacrifical blessing." but it wasn't playing so well with the 20-40 death cab fan demographic.

I know there was a study on preemies and autism that just came out, which is part of it (the gist being that very premature birth appears to be a fairly significant risk factor). That was on my medical news feed at work this week. But that's sometimes how it seems to work, where one study (sometimes with several parts) will come out and make its way through the news circuit in varying ways, making it seem like there's oh so much news about some issue. And then people write reaction pieces and fluff stories until the next thing of interest shows up. Yay mass media.

I worked for a year with a girl with Autism.  She was awesome.  I taught her language and social skills.  The way that she was taught to put words together, though, she sounded a little like Yoda sometimes.

Also, although I've never read it, and my sister is no book critic, she's told me good things about the Jenny McCarthy book about her son with Autism.

That's the way my friend's grandmother talked, too!  But she didn't have autism, she was just French-Canadian.
