In case anybody needs something to do on Saturday, I'm going to be shooting a show at Schuba's featuring Allá, Bird Names, Miracle Condition, plus DJs Brian Costello & Sara Bassick, $10, 10pm. I can't say it's going to be an incredible time since I'm going to be working and I'm broke as a fucking joke, but the music seems to be good.

Edit: Saturday. The 22nd is Saturday.

Metro Brewing tapping a special IPL at Fizz Bar and Grill
Ravenswood's Metropolitan Brewing comes to Fizz Bar and Grill with a special brew! From the Metro Brewing website:

Just for kicks, we hopped on the band wagon (ha! see what I did there?) and brewed a very small test batch of a single-hop beer using German Tradition Hallertau hops. By "single" we mean: a crapload of one kind of hops, added 3 different times during the boil. We call it an IPL. The *only* place you'll get to try this beer... ever... is at Fizz on Wednesday night of Chicago Craft Beer Week.

Metro bottles will also be on special for $4, in case you're not a hophead. We'd understand completely.

This free event starts up at 8 pm and will end by 11 pm.

Many entries in the book serve craft beers and the book itself celebrates historic bars, just as ale aficionados (like Sean) celebrate craft beers.

Within the covers of this book, you’ll learn the stories behind Chicago’s best nightspots: how they came to be, their intertwining histories, uniqueness, celebrity clientele, and their place within the culture of the great city of Chicago. We even threw in the most historic suburban bars, taverns we miss the most, and do-it-yourself historic pub crawls.

Come help Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. celebrate Chicago Craft Beer Week at Guthries Tavern. Beers available will be the classic Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and draught offerings of Sierra Nevada Summerfest, 2010 Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest, and the very rare Sierra XXX Fritz & Ken’s Ale.

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest features fresh hops from New Zealand, where fall happens during our spring. These fresh whole-cone hops are picked, dried, and shipped to the brewery within days of the harvest. Tasting Notes: Toasty, caramel-like malts with a fresh hop flavor of peppery spice, and lemon with rose-like aromas.

Sierra XXX Fritz & Ken’s Ale is a rich and roasted stout, perfect for aging and worthy of your finest snifter. Fritz Maytag of Anchor Steam agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary.

The fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, we went to the added expense of flying these hops from New Zealand to Chico so we could brew with them the week after they were picked.

The Best Bitter Ale is brewed using imported English malts and hops, this medium-bodied, copper-colored beer is a great rendition of the popular English beer style. Our Best Bitter is a very drinkable yet flavorful ale. Also available will be Pale Ale and Porter bottles.

oh hey, so I'll be in Chicago on the night of July 1, if any of you fine folks want to hang. not sure where I'll be exactly--Mary's in charge of that city, and we're staying with a grad-school friend of hers who teaches at DePaul (not sure where she lives), but surely we will be in a bar and alcohol will be consumed, that much is certain.

I'll be in MPLS on Sunday and Monday nights, and maybe/hopefully MKE the day before Chicago, or en route to it.

Oberlin is still tentatively on the schedule, depending on, y'know, stuff. You won't actually be there, will you? That would be weird. But funny.

And Jim, I'll report back on the neighborhood when I find out, would definitely be cool to see you again.
