Playing football made me susceptible to "stingers," and twenty years later I still get neck pain and numbness like Jeb is describing from time to time. As you suspected, it's a radial nerve getting pinched by vertebra as it exits your spinal cord. Once irritated, it swells, making it even easier to irritate again = a positive feeback loop of pain.

Things that strain or flex the neck bring it on/ back: biking, throwing frisbees, volleyball, carrying something heavy on one side, sleeping funny. Sitting at a computer too long can also get it going.

Initial treatment is rest, keeping your neck in a neutral position, and anti-inflammatories. I know you're no fan of opiates, but they've gotten me through my worst nights with this problem. Smooth steady shoulder and back exercises (light weights, no jerking) seem to help as prevention but not so much on recovery.

As an update, I bought some tiger balm which seems to help a lot, and I've been taking Ibuprofen, and that seems to be keeping it under control. I'm trying to be careful about how I sit and what I lift and all that as well. Band practice last night was a little rough and by the end of it I was back to being in a considerable amount of pain. It does seem in general that it's already starting to get a little better, but it's kind of hard to say.

Definitely going to take it super easy at the gym tonight if I don't end up just skipping out.

If you have enough money go get a massage or adjusted by a chiropractor! That shit is great. Accupuncture never helped me but I have been getting adjusted and massages one to two times a week since my bike accident and I have really really improved from when I first started. I had similar symptoms to you, too.

Maybe I'll convince M to buy me a massage for Valentine's Day or something.

Feeling better today so far, for sure.

Going to skip the gym tonight though.

What the fuck. I got out of bed and took a pee and blew my nose, and there's just like tons of fresh red blood up in my head. I've had bloody noses in the morning from cold, dry air cracking up the tissues, but then it's crusty and finite. This shit won't stop as far as I can blow and it's wet wet wet. No pain or nothing anywhere.

If you've been bleeding uncontrollably for this long, you should get to a hospital!

go for a steam bath or pour boiling water over a couple chamomile tea bags and half a sliced cucumber and couple slices of lemon, making a tent with a towel over your head. drink a pot of herbal tea with honey and lemon, plus take a couple teaspoons of raw oil a day, then call me in the morning.

Oh shit. I'd heard about all of this, but thought that yours wasn't done within the danger period... crap. I hope that it's not making you sicker.

I've just read a couple of reports on the BBC and Independent sites and listened to Paxman's Newsnight piece, but I haven't really got a grip on the likelihood of it affecting me, to be honest. I definitely have what they keep calling a 'metal-on-metal' implant though (mine was a hip resurfacing, rather than a hip replacement, but I think they're using the latter term to cover everything).

I didn't really catch the point about a 'danger period'. I realise there are different models, but I don't remember the exact name of mine - besides the 'Birmingham Hip'.

I suspect I'll get a letter from my specialist now, as that article suggests. Ah well, one more thing to add to the list.

When I do finally keel over at 115, I'm really going to laugh about all of this.

Overslept, have an excruciating sinus headache as a result, sinus headache now turning into a migraine... ugh, I feel like I'm going to throw up. This is horrible. And the only remedy is... more sleep!

I can't sleep because there's this like caustic, violent heartburnish thing going on. I don't understand what it could be... I took a ranitidine before making myself puke as much as I could, but it's still so painful. It's like I swallowed lye or something. I ate some wise honey bbq potato chips, a couple beers, and my zoloft. Prior to that I haven't eaten for like nine hours, and I just threw it all up anyhow... What the fuck. Did I eat dish detergent or something?
