Sorry if I cheesed you off fishjames, but after several years of working for an alternative energy company, I'm innately suspicious of anyone asking for donations because they "care about the planet more than profit." Still--sorry for bein a dick!

Fair enough, pollo. There's obviously a lot of greenwashing for fun & fortune out there. But an alternative energy company might actually turn a profit at some point - or at least burn through a federal windfall in a couple years (e.g., Solyndra). No one's going to make money off journalism, much less environmental journalism.

I guess it pissed me off mostly because I've known Scott for years, and if there's anyone you can trust with your news, it's him. He's also as big a Gandalfs fanatic as anyone here, in case that wasn't clear from my first post.

I'm offline the rest of the afternoon but will post some exemplary Grist stories in the news thread when I get back.

Summing up the reasons to give money to GRIT:

1. dude on the internet vouches for other dude
2. other dude likes duh Mountain Goats
3. blogging doesn't turn a profit so it's, like, NOBLE, man!
4. a dude wrote for Salon
5. "Grist is a non-profit because they care more about the planet than profit."

Thanks for the due diligence, bethany!

While I don't think that fishjim has a bright future in non-profit fundraising (sorry dude!)

You mean I can't just rough people up & reach for their wallet?  Cool

Apparently there's a new Japanese place opening on the northwest side called E Wok Cafe. How long you figure until the C&D from Lucasfilm?

Could you link to an actual news article next time instead of some douchey Gawker-style tripe where the author "comedically" paraphrases someone else's work and buries the actual story somewhere in his hi-LAR-ious snark-filled commentary? Thanks.

Damn, I was starting to miss the histrionic, unnecessarily bitchy comments to completely innocuous posts, but Thermo came through for me.

Because I got roasted by coldforge?
I am kidding. I have not done anything else to be internet famous that I am aware of. If there are sex tapes or college poetry or pictures of that one haircut floating around I would like to know, but I was kidding.

I think she meant the earlier one?

I mean, Thermo's pissy outburst doesn't really qualify as a roast.

Yeah I'm not going to apologize for being annoyed when I click on what looks like a news link only to find a blog post in which a news story has been digested, paraphrased, filtered, re-synthesized or otherwise spat out through boilerplate net-snark, for God knows whose benefit. I suppose I'm the only dude who finds the Gawker model a waste of time.
