So Google released this new extension for Google Chrome that I'm pretty excited about. They call it 'language immersion', which it isn't, exactly, but basically it randomly translates a certain proportion of words on every page into a language of your choosing. I think it will be really useful for keeping a low-level awareness of the language I'm learning at all times. I've got it in Italian right now and works as described. Technology!

Unfortunately the promo video is almost perversely unpleasant; a montage of people butchering their way through foreign-language phrases they obviously have no knowledge of would seem to mock the very notion of language learning in the first place.

I think one of the reasons this Chrome extension is so cool is that it feels so much more sticky to learn words by figuring them out, rather than just having them written down with their answers on a card. Like, if I see a phrase in context and I think, 'Ah, ogni means "every"', I remember much better than if somebody does that bit of thinking for me.

I've just sent the link to said friend. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't use chrome even if you paid him, but I think he'd find the idea interesting. This is a man who started to teach himself Spanish by getting a copy of The Name of the Rose (which he'd read in English) and going for it. He'd inattentively studied French in HS, but not any other languages than that. Once he'd got TNotR done he enrolled in a conversation class, and then lived in Spain for 2 years. He's just recently moved (from Argentina) to Switzerland, in an area where they speak Sweizerteutch, which he has no clue about, or German really...so in some ways it's right up his alley
