I've missed one of both teams' first two games, but I think I agree - Poland seemed like the most exciting side of the two on the basis of what I saw.

Also, a few days ago I discovered a blog that today has an insightful take on Ireland's last defeat:

Wow, can't believe Russia are out. They had put in two of the best performances of the tournament before tonight. The 1-1 with poland was one of the 2 best games of the week, and don't forget they beat the Czechs (group winners!) 4-1 and TOTALLY outclassed them....they must be stunned

Yeah, I was really looking forward to seeing Russia again... The Czech, once again, were not very impressive tonight, but they remained solid and took advantage of the Polish collapse in the second half.

So happy to see Greece going forward but a massive blow for them losing the heart and soul of the team, Giorgos Karagounis, in the next game over a bullshit yellow card. Not giving him the penalty is one thing, but getting a yellow card when there was obvious contact is tragic. I loved his emotional reaction to it, repeatedly crossing himself in disbelief. That's kind of what I love most about these huge tournaments, emotions are always running high.

I was hoping for Poland to win the other game but oh well.

So did Greece actually play well in that match? Last time I checked they were still just about the most boring team ever.

The first half looked rather dire, but the goal was well taken and they had a few other good chances, and they bullied Russia out of the game. Not a classic performance, but a lot to admire.

They played fantastic defense throughout the game and had some decent looks themselves as well. It kinda depends on your definition of 'boring'. This was Russia's shot chart:

some drama due in group b tonight. any of the 4 teams can go through. the dutch need to win by 2 clear goals at least and have germany beat the danes. right now both games stand at 1-1, and germany and portugal are through as it stands.

The rule changes are very strange. When Holland went 1-0 ahead, they and Portugal were together on 3 points, but the Dutch were higher in the table. Then, when Germany took the lead, Denmark joined them on 3 points, and suddenly it was Portugal placed above Holland, as their goals scored against Denmark (3-2) were taken into account to separate the 3-way tie. No, me neither really.

Anyway, that was then and this is now, as ABC once memorably sang, and I do hope Portugal get through. As much as it pains me to say it, Ronaldo is a joy to watch at times.

in the event of a tie, the first consideration is who has the most points from the games between the teams in question, like a little mini league. then if those points are equal, it goes to goal difference.

The Dutch are reverting to their old habit of committing horrible fouls now. What a terrible team, seriously.

If ever there was an example of the uselessness of possession and passing statistics, it's this:

They were to a large extent helped by another disastrous defensive performance from the Dutch, but I found Portugal's performance very convincing last night - I hope they play as well in the quarter-finals and beat the Czech Republic.

I think Portugal and Germany will both get through their quarter finals. Not exactly sticking my neck out there, I realise, but still.
