As much as it pained me to see Angela Merkel so happy, that was a beautiful, heartwarming win.

Didn't a major Greek paper just publish a photoshop of her wearing a swastika? Yeah, she's really gonna want to give free money to those dudes now.

I know it's illogical but I've just had this gnawing feeling all day today that France are going to beat Spain tonight.

Yeah, this was never going to happen. After the game, Blanc candidly admitted that they were hoping to make it to half-time at 0-0, but then the damn Spaniards ruined that brilliant plan by scoring early and then they pretty much didn't know what to do. A strong contender for most boring, demoralizing game of the competition.

Very boring indeed. I do hope Portugal put an end to this insufferable Spanish team.

gerrard and parker, forever chasing pirlo's shadow. it has been a joy to watch.

it'd be a tragedy is pirlo isn't a semi finalist.

My favourite moment, from the commentator:

"That would be a cruel way to go out - a mis-hit cross from a West Ham reject"  Laughing

I wouldn't say England were awful, except perhaps in the extra time where they were pretty much done, but this is definitely a very, very deserved win. So much beautiful passing from the Italians, shame their finishing wasn't quite as good.

Probably one of the most, if not the most entertaining game of the competition so far too, even though it was the only goalless one.

And Pirlo has once again proved himself to be a monument of class - only him could get away with that penalty.

possession 37% - 63%

shots 8 - 31

on target 4 - 18

the most emphatic 0-0 drubbing.

from 60 minutes on wards there was only on team interested in playing football and trying to win.

My take on it was that England were interested, but not quite up to the task physically (they had played pretty offensively whenever they could after all, and their substitutions were not particularly defensive). They were pretty much just outplayed. I would really have liked to see both teams in the semi-finals instead of those annoying Spaniards, basically.

i'm not a fan of spain particularly in this tournament, but i'd much rather see a team with technical ability that attempts to try and play football over whatever it is england offer.

I think you're being harsh! There were some very good combinations in the first half from England, and they played excellently (if intermittently) against Sweden as well.

but how poor were sweden? having a few good attacking moves is to be expected of almost any team. but seriously, their lack of ability to keep the ball is outrageous for a team at that level.

alan shearer just said "That's what we are...5th, 6th or 7th in the world"

and really, constantly putting up with this nonsense is why i dislike the english football team so much.

I chalked down the "not being able to retain the ball for more than ten seconds" thing that happened throughout the extra time to physical exhaustion, but it's true that they did make a lot of technical errors, yes.

And you know, when you follow France, you just become admirative of any team that actually does more than two or three good collective moves in a game  Smile
