Why did my jam fail to set? Apparently it is because I peeled the apples, like a ding dong. Sheesh. Happily, this can be rectified.

I also cored them  Sad
But it turns out you can re-cook with a fresh bag of peels & cores  Smile
And can then cook too long and end up with super thick jam  Sad
Which still tastes great! But you don't have as much  Confused

or it's just apple butter... sorry about the house :-(

Guineafowl I've always admired, they are ridiculously great at warding off snakes.

BUt so so stupid. A real flock bird. We had three and they were amazing at raising the alarm when weird stuff happened around the house, but when one got taken by a fox the other two were fucked. We used to say they were like the weird sisters, but instead of having to share an eye, they shared a brain, and the one who got eaten was the one with the brain at the time...the others lasted about a week without their sister :-(

i'm having trouble deciding between bees and chickens, since they are both allowed to live on my downtown balcony but might not happily co-exist.

They can coexist. we had bees in our chicken run. I think it's ducks that eat bees...

I love you. And I love that I knew what this was going to be before clicking it. Probably my favorite moment in the entire series.

i was more concerned about the birds being stung, since they would be sharing cosy quarters. love the idea of having both and letting the chickens roam around my apartment, maybe get a bunny as well, except for the idea of animal poop on the couch i'm having made in france. do you think one of those expandable walls used to keep toddlers penned into certain areas would do the trick? oh damn, i just googled 'can chickens fly' and it said they can launch themselves 5' in the air!

man, I think a sitcom about CBS and her bees and chooks apartment would be frickin' hilarious.

As America: The Book said, "If the President were the longest recorded flight by a chicken, he would be thirteen seconds." Also yeah I would watch the hell outta that show.

i have a 4-5 foot fence in my backyard and my chickens, with both wings clipped, get out whenever they feel like it.

T_T have you tried only clipping one wing? Some people reckon it works better as there's no hope for the chicken of balanced flight (though chickens are not the most graceful of fliers at the best of times ;-) And you'll always get occasional Houdini chooks anyway... maybe your two are like that? I had one black bantam who could not be contained in anything less robust than a metre square welded steel cage, and sometimes she'd dig out of that too. Lucky for her she was smarter and faster than your average fox. (getting my chicken nerd on)

What clare said.  You should only clip one wing.  Clipping both makes flying more difficult but determined chickens will still do it.  I've never seen a chicken with one wing clipped get more than 3-4 feet off the ground.

they started off with just one wing clipped, so doing both was just a last ditch effort. maybe they just need tiny ball and chains.

i think our fence is just too short (it's not the standard height for a backyard on one side). they don't go far, but it's been a constant stream of passing kids and neighbors telling us our chickens are out.

one of them stays in the yard, but the other three are trouble makers.

4's a good number? i want to get the smallest number possible that will keep the girls happy and socialized, would be fine with one but she might become sad without a gal pal or three.

anne da man: here i figured you gals were sweet to say you'd watch a tv show about my daily life and what i posted might have sounded snippy and contrary. it made me laugh when i wrote it but sometimes humour doesn't translate so well online, am glad you get it.

Goddamn neighbor's dog jumped two fences and chewed up three of my birds today. I've seen that dog loose before, but let it go because I don't like complaining.
Damnit.
