Dang, I preferred John's answer better, because it meant having less records to buy. I'll check out City Of Daughters anyway.

I'm in complete agreement with John, though Streethawk & Rubies are constantly competing for the top spot.

I'm glad this thread got resurrected.  I've been hittin' Destroyer with a vengeance latley.

edit: okay, now all of this got me thinking...I'd probably have to rank This Night before either Your Blues or Thief...so I guess I'm only in agreement concerning the first two

Ok so what did the right answer end up being wrt best album besides Rubies?  I got Rubies based solely on the strength of recs here (plus once I saw Destroyer live and Dan was so drunk he fell over an amp and somebody said "who let the drunk on stage" and Dan looked up into the rafters and said something like "I can't help but feel....those comments...were directed...at me" which was the only thing he said all evening) and now I want to go further down the rabbit hole.  I am hearing Streethawk?

Streethawk is good.
Then Thief and Your Blues at the same time.
This Night eventually, but not until after notorious lightning & other works and also city of daughters.
golden bridge maybe, and the first one, but not really.

I forgot to mention that they were opening for the new pornographers, and that whenever Dan came out even the booze was not enough to disguise what I gathered to be a pretty extreme hatred for the rest of the band, in particular Newman.  Which is not altogether surprising (certainly not as surprising to me as his membership in the NPs in the first place, now having familiarized myself with some Destroyer material).

I had no idea that This Night was so disliked - it's probably my personal favorite record of Dan's, though Streethawk is inarguably his finest moment as a songwriter and record-maker.

This Night is pretty great.

And a "yeah" from me on the Streethawk love. It's the bestest.

the first half of thief is so good but it falls off really hard

it has come to my attention recently, after consulting Thief on a regular basis, that this is a stupid thing i said and apparently i used to be some kind of idiot

i take full responsibility for my previous indiscretions, and would like to personally apologize for any emotional trauma i may have caused to you all re: Thief by Destroyer and its sweetness
