Added more!  Mercyful Fate to The Chasm.  I'm having too much fun doing this.

The praises of the Mercyful Fate album cannot be sung loud enough, or long enough.

Black Widow is so rad.  The Sacrifice LP was glued to my turntable about this time last year.

For some reason my wife thinks they are the most laughable band in the history of music.  She is so, so, so wrong.

Satan Almighty, do I have some catching-up to do. I know something about metal, but mostly elemental stuff, like atomic weights, conductivity, etc. Musically I'm still stuck in Black Sabbath.

Saw this 55-gallon waste drum in a tow-yard the other day, twenty yards from my totaled Prius. I thought of this thread.

speaking of once sweet bands coming back from long a long hiatus, autopsy's new album shows that its possible for that to happen and not be the worst thing to ever happen

I like how it has a file drawer shoved in it.

It is a black metal filing cabinet, which is often advertised to me by google.

Adding to Slime's list if that's cool:

Katatonia / Discouraged Ones

Scott Seward on ILX calls this "shoegazer doom of the first order" and he is right. Their canonical record, Brave Murder Day, is rescued from a completely depressive palette by, you know, sweet doom metal riffs and screaming. This has neither. It sort of staggers toward its destination which doesn't seem to be much of anywhere. The air is thick.

Just when I think I like metal as much as I ever will, I fall even more deeply in love.  Jump starting this thread, added some content in the second post.

You should just add new posts as we go along. Those first couple of posts are getting intimidatingly long!

OK!

Manowar / Into Glory Ride
The best Manowar album.  For too long I thought they were just a band for laughing at.  Then you hear incredible songs like Gloves of Metal and Revelation.  Now I am at this scary point where I personally identifying with the songs.   Soon enough I'm going to be this middle aged Russian guy.
Gloves of Metal

Katharsis / VVorldVVithoutEnd
The second best black metal band going today.  Absolute fucking chaos.  Batshit vocals.  Unrelenting, no compromise.
Acent From Ghoulgotha

Arcturus / The Sham Mirrors
Through my teen years, at moments of frustration over my own musical shortcomings, I would lock my bedroom door and pretend to play piano on my desk to Star Crossed.  This is my desert island album.  Timeless and fun.  Plus, it has my three favorite Norwegians (Garm of Ulver, Hellhammer of Mayhem, Ihsahn of Emperor doing guest vox on the album one true ripper).  There is also a funny history of this album being pieced together by email bit by bit over a couple of years.  Really hard to believe when you listen to it.
Star Crossed

diSEMBOWELMENT / Transcendence into the Peripheral
Sure path to heavy metal greatness: Step 1, Be Australian.  Step 2, Form an ok Napalm Death knock off band with unnecessary second drummer and record shitty sounding cassette demos.  Step 3, Produce one-off hypnotic funeral doom album, completely unlike anything you were doing before full of creepy Dead Can Dance atmosphere and glacial paced rhythms. Step 4, Call it a quits.  Alternate path: Be blatantly homosexual and sing songs about slow anal sex without anyone realizing.
Cerulean Transience of All My Imagined Shores

d.usk is 1/2 of diSEMBOWELMENT and is essentially just a name they gave themselves to play d. songs again and some new songs that are very much d. cotninued.  They got serious about being a band, but are now continuing under the name Inverloch.
