Fucking outrageous, indeed.

Not trying to make excuses for my adopted country here, but the decision to grant the guy asylum would have had to be made by Britain here, because that's where he entered the EU (or a country that is considered "safe") in the first place. Due to a completely fucked-up paragraph on European level, a person's right to asylum always has to be determined in the first country considered "safe" (which, for most EU countries, are all surrounding countries, anyway), so if you move on from one such "safe" country to another, your appeal will automatically be rejected there on the grounds that you would have to apply in the first country. Which is how a lot of people who had every reason to flee from their countries are being rejected on the grounds that they traveled through some other place at some point in the course of their journey, incidentally.

Again, not trying to make excuses (after all, the Netherlands were more than happy to sign those contracts and laws, and to implement them even in cases as outrageous as this), on the contrary: It's fucked up on a much larger scale, because the whole European asylum and immigration policy is laid out like that.

Way to be progressive, Europe

yeah but the rhetoric of the tv show has been scaled back from 8-->5, and the rhetoric of the radio show has scaled back from 10-->7.

Its no alan colmes show though.

The guy with the Bill Clinton hit on my date thing was a guy I met this weekend.  One of his bands was playing at a private function for Bill 2 or 3 weeks after the lewinsky thing.  He expected bill to be low-key and reserved with all that was going on but he was definitely the life of the party and fairly interested in every woman in the room.

You use 'progressive' in my favorite way here--i.e. placing human rights above mechanistic legal mumbo-jumbo.

I'd also disbelieve about 90% of them. Anecdotes are cheap; I'd imagine they're even cheaper in a place like Washington.

this sounds like it came from some hardboiled '30s crime movie.  i think thermofusion, DCDave and Pollo should all be recast as rival detectives or something like that.  lptj fanfic, help me out.

"Anecdotes are cheap; they're even cheaper in a place like Washington" definitely has a film noir voiceover-narrative ring to it.  Naturally, it has to be accompanied by a slow B&W crane shot of a deserted rain-swept street with a detective (Pollo?) in a fedora and trenchcoat pensively smoking a cigarette underneath a torn awning as a neon light that simply says "BAR" flickers on the edge of death behind him.

Good question.  You definitely need all of your film noir stock characters:

-Alcoholic Gumshoe
-Naive Reporter
-Femme Fatale
-Drug-Addled Musician
-Sinister Rich Guy With a Mansion Full of Exotic Antiquities
-Smarmy Street Corner Gossip/Rat/Whatever
-By-The-Book, No-Nonsense Police Detective on the Verge of Retirement
-Ordinary, Upstanding Citizen in Financial Trouble & Mixed Up In Some Morally Ambiguous Shit w/ Sinister Rich Guy and/or Femme Fatale

etc.
