He looked so sad. We knew he was going
to say something about all the violence and hatred in the world, because
he is always saying something about that. Usually he doesn’t
seem to really know what he is talking about except in the vaguest
sense. But there was no mistaking the agony in those eyes which now
have no nose beneath them to set them off; his pain was so palpable
that it was almost impossible not to share in it. He said “thank
you” as he always does, and then he looked down at what appeared
to be a prepared statement, and then he opened his mouth. |
