SIX VIEWS OF DIONNE WARWICK'S "PROMISES, PROMISES" (LP, Scepter Records, produced by Bacharach-David, year unlisted)

I.

I was hunkered down all lean and hungry in one of the castle's unmanned turrets on the northwest face when the Normans advanced their offensive, progressing ever deeper into our verdant land and changing us all forever; the year was 1066, and I saw them coming. I was chewing on a crust of bread. And I saw Dionne Warwick among their numbers, entertaining them by breaking their hearts again and again and again. She sang as they made their way toward the city. I heard her. It tore me up inside because I knew that there was something leaving us that wasn't ever going to come back. I started to sing along with some of the words as best I could understand them.
