There are a couple of
different conceptions people have about what pop songs are and what goes into making
them. The first, which is the peg on which rock and roll hangs
its hat,
favors the idea of spontaneous utterance; bands working after this
model do their best to hide whatever signs might be in evidence
that real work and thought have gone into the process of making
their
songs. Techniques to preserve the illusion of spontaneity range
from the obvious (leaving in a stray mistake or two) to the absurd
(having
the singer shout “c’mon!” right before the guitar
solo, thereby asking the listener to accept the audibly false proposition
that the singer and guitarist were within earshot of each other
at the moment in question). |
