And then looming above all of them, destroying their melodramatic emo castles, there’s Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend,” which time will reveal to have been the single greatest song ever recorded. And there’s the new Morbid Angel album, which is really more of the same, only there’s nothing wrong with “more of the same” when “the same” equals “exploding packets of brilliant light.” Which pushes us right back into the Breeders’ Title TK, about which I would have written a whole update except that we’re labelmates and somebody’d be bound to accuse me of logrolling, which I wouldn’t do but there’s the appearance of impropriety, as they say in political journalism. Whatever: “London Song” is less upbeat than you think it is, if you think of it. |
