And once you actually start getting into the nuts and bolts of trying to communicate some useful information about the band in question, that’s when the disaster of the whole enterprise really reveals itself. I know: I tried writing about Lifter Puller once. They are my favorite band of the last ten years. I managed to limit myself to one song, and I came out of it OK, but at the end I didn’t feel like I’d really done any justice to the miraculous thing that happens inside of me when I sit down and listen to them. At the right moments on a Lifter Puller record, like when Craig says “and it ain’t that sweet, working six nights a week” in the lead-off track from The Entertainment and the Arts, I feel like the final truth of the universe is on the very cusp of being revealed to me. It is a delicious feeling. It’s what your favorite records are capable of doing year in and year out.
