Which is why in the end there’s only one way to tell this story: something sad happened to a person, and his great gift was lost. In this week of unfortunate events and what promise to be even more unfortunate responses, it’s well to remember that the gifts we bring to one another are all that matter in the end. We should spend our time and resources finding ways to treasure them. The best of them have no rivals. They may pop up in places as unlikely as Cambridge, or Queens, or Kabul. Some of them we may never run across at all. It is a shame to lose even one of them.
