But the song that more than any other asserts that Natacha Merritt’s schtick has not only been done before but done much better is “Through the Barricades,” the title track from the group’s 1986 album and the final song on Gold - the Best of Spandau Ballet. Here in the U.S. we did not really notice “Through the Barricades.” While the chart positions of the songs on this collection are dutifully noted next to their titles (“Gold,” #29; “True,” #4; “Only When You Leave,” #34; “Communication,” #59), there is no alongside “Through the Barricades.” Perhaps the public wasn’t ready for it. Who can stand looking directly into a mirror?
