There are a couple of things at work here. This kid at work: is he
an anomaly? Does he misunderstand the words “pop” and “rock”?
Well, who knows: there can’t be many things more boring than
being interrogated by an adult about what one means by one’s
words, so I didn’t press the issue. Do the other kids I work
with even think about this stuff? No; of that much I am quite sure.
So, yes, he’s an anomaly in the sense that he even thinks about
genre at all in this way. It’s this very anomaly that forces
me to take him at his word: he knows what he means,
and it’s up to me to unpack it, rather than saying “Phwoarr,
yass, well, in my day ‘pop’ meant Burt Bacharach...” |
