Their
refusal to sing about blondes and cars, though, is part of what made
Iron Maiden better (and funnier) than so many of their peers. They
are a Dungeons and Dragons players dream come true: a band who
write truly rocking songs about World War II battles, Icarus, scenes
from the book of Revelation, and the heroic resistance of native Americans
to the westward expansion. This is dorky stuff, to be sure, but one
only has to let ones guard down for a second and its all
over: the here-come-the-horses rhythm section is impossible to resist,
and the melodies are totally sweet. Anyone who can listen to The
Trooper and not get caught up in its twin-guitar harmonies and
lyrical combat melodramatics is too jaded for his own good. |
