something’s permanently breaking in these phrases, which are
delivered on Kid A in an insistent, angrily panicked but well-controlled
voice and on Amnesiac in a resigned, permanently deferred,
roundly defeated voice, it’s also here that we know that there’s
no reprieve coming, ever. We get bits and pieces of the real world
of people and relationships and successes and failures and furniture
and chimneys, and we see that they are real-time versions of the ghosts
and shadows whose contemplation has been our main purpose. In fact
the ethereal world is somewhat better. Fewer people get hurt. |
