We already knew
about this; it was what we heard at the songs outset. Whats
different now is that we know that the speaker is lying, or at least withholding
an important piece of information, i.e., that the we in were
going to a place nearby is another woman. But how is this the
call that changed my destiny for the narrator? The call itself is
hardly the point; anything, after all, might have been said during it: Honey,
Im coming home in an hour, you want any mangoes from the supermarket
or something? for instance, or Just wanted to call and let you
know that Im going to sleep with a perfect stranger or Do
you have Prince Albert in a can? Making the call was not in and of
itself a mistake. The mistake, rather, was the lie that the speaker tells
during the call. But the speaker, who didnt write the lyrics hes
singing, either hasnt figured this out or is ignoring it, because
the second verse runs:
Two years gone, nothing's been won
I can't take it back. What's done is done.
One of her friends found out
That she wasn't my only one;
And it eats me from inside
That she's not by my side
Just because I made that call and lied
