I was flipping through the used discs in a rather anemic used CD section when I saw something that had once been so fixed an aspect of my consciousness that it barely even registered: Cabaret Voltaire’s Hai!. Sometimes going through the “used” bin is an ontologically daunting proposition: questions come up that lead to other questions, which necessitate placing this or that album in historical context, which usually involves a myriad of personal signposts. It gets exhausting. Other times, of course, there’s just nothing in the bin worth even thinking about twice, but running across the CD release of a 1982 Cabaret Voltaire album lands us squarely on the time-is-going-to-devour-us-all side of the curve.
