WHERE BETTER TO START than with the venerable Party of One, a one-man-band of whom exactly no-one outside of a handful of people scattered across the world has heard? I got their tape White Noise when I moved from California to Chicago in the fall of ‘95 knowing that I wouldn’t have anything with which to listen to music other than a tape deck when I got there. “Make me tapes,” I said to my friend Peter -- the same one mentioned above, whose cassette collection is truly daunting -- and he did. He made me tapes of his aggro-art-assault band, Exit House, and he made me tapes of various Chino bands banging on oil cans and raging against the dying of the light, and he made me tapes of his solo casio-powered concern, Party of One.
