It’s just Roky and an acoustic guitar; maybe there’s
a second guitarist. (If there isn’t, then Roky needs to placed
on the Serious Guitar Gods shortlist immediately.) He’s playing
a really pretty, droney progression that walks down from the tonic
to a minor third below it, and then to the fourth and finally to the
grand fifth. Blues with that all-important minor pop chord thrown
in, you know. You could drift off on the sometimes clumsily picked
but always hypnotic chords, but then Roky’s voice — that
voice! it’s like Buddy Holly recording his very own version of
Patricia Hearst’s “Power to the people, this is Tania”
tape in an unmarked desert silo — keens through the murk:
The singing grandfather will saw off your head
The singing grandfather will kill you dead
The singing grandfather will drag you away |
