As we’ve mentioned before, Darkane is a really exciting band. They’re from Sweden, and they don’t play black metal, and they don’t play death metal, and they don’t play power metal or goth metal or grind metal or prog. (They don’t play garage rock either, for that matter.) They are, to my ears, the most authentic heavy metal band working. Their songs are melodic, but not maudlin; adept, but not proggy; hard, but not in the savage way of the really hard stuff. Don’t take that the wrong way: we love the hard stuff. That new Hate Eternal album that’s coming out next month? Short of a miracle, it’s the album of the year. What makes Darkane special is that they’re neither see-how-brutal-we-are Nordicore, nor you-only-gotta-sell-15,000-units-in-Finland-to-get-a-gold-record metal nouveau. Darkane’s greatness lies in how different they are from all the other kids on the block.
