Not like they would listening to super-frantic death metal — that’s not what this is. Rather, Darkane seem torn between several impulses, which if I thought it’d do any good I’d try to tease out like multiple personalities: their inner Wingers, their overt Kreators, their sublimated Sepulturas. But the fun of it all is in finding out for yourself. While there’s nothing on Expanding Senses quite as exquisite as their previous album’s highlight, “Emanation of Fear,” it’s still an album worth looking up. Is this a cop-out? Oh, hell yes: I’ve already missed one quarter of football, and the Raiders are ahead. But I’ve done my duty, which is to tell people about records they really ought to hear. Darkane’s one of my favorite bands, and they’ve got a new one, and it doesn’t sound like anybody else’s record. They’re touring Poland. Go check them out if you get a chance. I’ll see you here next week.
