The alert reader will by now have noticed that we have descended into popup hell. It is because we are distracted. Darkane’s new album, whose title we haven’t even told you yet (it’s Expanding Senses), is playing loudly, and it’s got all the qualities that make Darkane original: the mixture of soaring melodies and rhythms that accelerate a little too quickly to be generally palatable; the guitar/drum breakdowns that emulate locked grooves for brief intervals and then seem to shrug off their experimental leanings; the heavy production that lends a very science-ficiton feel to the whole affair. Through the whole thing runs a distinct overtone of methylphenidate, popularly known by its brand name, Ritalin. Every move Darkane makes is distracting; it’s like watching a split-screen movie. The bizarre, compelling beauty of the cover art contrasts so sharply with the speed-metal riffing of a song like “Violence From Within” that one’s circuits begin to short.
