All right, good people: this is the week where I let down my guard. Every Sunday I get home from work and I head straight for the computer, where I wake up the stray paragraphs I’ve had working throughout the week to see which of them are fit enough to produce offspring and which are too scrawny to survive. Not this week. I’m four paragraphs into a piece about Today Is The Day’s Sadness Will Prevail, but Sadness Will Prevail is awfully complicated, intersecting as it does with the post-Nirvana boom, the mid-eighties Chicago I-can-make-you-look-at-me wail, and modern heavy metal. It’s on Relapse, for Christ’s sake: the more I listened to it the more complex it got. Most weeks I would be up to the task, and if things were a little different around here, I’d be staring down Sadness Will Prevail like Ahab googly-eyeing the black waves at midnight.
