Oh, sure, I could tell you how I feel when Caruso bites off a proper chunk of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade de Don Juan. But hasn’t popular discourse already been cheapened enough without wiseguys who like the sounds of their own voices holding forth on music whose fundamental architecture they don’t really adequately understand? I think so. I think people who are able to string a few sentences together tend to interpret their own eloquence as a license to spill a few thousand words on any topic at all.
In some cases I figure there’s no harm; as far as I’m concerned, anybody’s qualified to discuss rock and roll, which prides itself on pure physicality and ease of consumption, and similarly I think that electronic music, since it is so deeply in love with its own currency, must be receptive to commentary from any person who is alive to hear it.
