Sometimes you’re into bands, sometimes you’re into styles, sometimes you’re into labels. In the apparent absence of much going on death-metalwise, I’ve turned to ambient techno, about which it is almost impossible to write anything interesting (“...cool washes of pure sound like oil slicks on a wet road” and suchlike seem to be the order of the day when writing about electronic music: I’ll let you know if I’m able to come up with anything actually worth reading). The rest of my attention has been gradually morphing itself into fannish worship of a few tiny labels: Family Vineyard, out of Indiana, who put out really great art-damaged music without any of the usual goatee-strokin’ hokum that often accompanies such stuff; LTM, who’ve recently released everything ever recorded by the Stockholm Monsters, before whose greatness all right-thinking persons must tremble with fear and awe; and most recently, by which I mean “right now,” there’s Megalon, of whom maybe twelve people have heard.
