The question was
this: “How come people who listen to instrumental-experimental electro-acoustic
soundscape/tone-poem stuff don’t like New Age music?” I still
think it’s a fair question, even though I can feel some of you Squarepusher
fans getting antsy and shifting in your seats. New Age, a term which appeared
suddenly around 1985 in music stores who had a decent amount of Windham
Hill records and no place to put them, is shorthand for “bloodless
crap” among most self-respecting music listeners: who among us would
announce, even among strangers to see what kind of reaction it would get,
that we’re into New Age music? Go ahead, tell the next person who asks
you what you’ve been into lately that you’ve been going through
a New Age phase. I dare you. See? You’re with me on this one.
