Am I saying that you’ve gotta love Rotting Christ even though there’s a song on Genesis that sounds dangerously like black metal as reenvisioned by some anonymous Italian disco guy? Well — I was gonna say “no,” but what I mean is Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. I don’t like to get any preachier than I already naturally am, but when it comes down to it, yes. You’ve got to love Rotting Christ. They do what they do, and the world grows more and more puzzled by it, and they show no signs of stopping. God bless them, every last one of them. In my fever-dream of Show Boat performed in an ice cavern somewhere in the wilds of eastern Europe, I hear the cast doing battle against Rotting Christ’s store-bought pedals and soda-wash keyboards, the original lyrics finally winning out while Genesis’s final number, “Under the Name of Legion,” retreats into instrumental overdrive:
