Something has changed in Olympia; people who live there talk about it, not in a depressed way but with some curiosity and concern. What's going on? What happened? Record sales, slumping everywhere, have now slumped in Olympia too. It's harder to get people to come out to shows. The overall good "scene" feeling, while not gone, isn't as pervasive as it once was. If you lived anywhere else in the indie world in 1998, you probably recognize what's going on: a special scene is changing in some way. It's too early to say what will become of it, and it would be presumptuous for an outsider like me to be the one to say it. I'll say this, though: the Yo Yo crowd, which had a lot of Olympians in it, can still generate a manic enthusiasm as powerful and impressive as any you'll see elsewhere. The passion is still there if a performer's willing to put on his game face and put in an honest day's work for it. Case in point:
