Because the Evaporators came to play, that’s why, and they took no prisoners. They’re an punk band from Vancouver, British Columbia, playing in a sort of updated, louder ‘77 punk style and they’re fronted by a guy named Nardwuar. Nardwuar, whose full title is Nardwuar the Human Serviette, is a guy whose fame rests largely on his kamikaze interviewing style; he works for the CBC, and he approaches both big-name celebrities and entry-level journeymen with a zeal that defies description. Like Howard Stern’s Stuttering John without any of the ill will, Nardwuar asks celebrities really stupid questions, and the way his interviewees answer tends to reveal a lot about them. While he’s undeniably obnoxious, he’s also quite charming, and his craft, examined closely, is much more savant than idiot to the discerning eye. He is a Canadian national treasure, and at this year’s YoYo he did a very special thing.
