There are those who reject the whole concept of the Big Idea, and they’ve got a point, and some of them are true masters: the Fall; Wire; the Flaming Lips; Stevie Wonder until the eighties got ahold of him. But the Big Idea has spectacle on its side, and it usually makes its first approach from the center of its own outrageousness, so it often makes a bigger impression. When somebody who’s got the Big Idea manages to articulate it, through whatever combination of language, sight, and sound, explosions take place. Epiphanies occur. All the lights come on.
