Its a tape like this one that speaks to the nebulous glories
of the cassette: the copyright that the format holds in perpetuity
on the concepts of obsolescence and disposability, its loaves-and-fishes
spinning of Something from Nothing, its eternally surprising worth.
While pretty much every song on Massive Luxury Overdose is
an instant classic, its the single, Crucified,
that really does it: its just so huge, and it proclaims its
creators ownership of a Really Big Idea with its every flourish.
The opening, in which a chorus of voices sings the refrain with
great seriousness in a melody that must surely have been cribbed
from Orff or Holst; the hi-NRG beat, which is an unsparing journey
into the heart of A Really Good Time; the wounded cockiness of vocalist
Jean-Pierre Barda, who can by no means be thought of as unaware
of just how funny his fabulousness is when he delivers the opening
verse in his theatrical, camera-ready speaking voice:
Ive seen the deepest darkness,
and wrestled with gods;
ride the noble harness,
raining cats and dogs.
I stand before my maker
like Moses on the hill
my Guinness record baker
I abide your will
