Which is less than it deserves, because Decapitated, while breaking no new ground at all, are one hell of a death metal band. They practically write their own feature stories: they’re from Poland (hook), they’re all under twenty-one (line), and their press photos reveal that they share at least twenty feet of hair among the four of ‘em, not to mention enough collective glowering to scare away a whole doorstep full of Jehovah’s Witnesses (sinker). I had their first album, Winds of Creation, which I thought was all right except for the vocals, which were pretty run-of-the-mill. Nihility doesn’t break any new ground vocally -- the trend in death metal of the non-melodic sort has been away from any vocal dynamic whatsoever and toward a uniform low-level roar, and Decapitated isn’t bucking the trend -- but from a strictly musical standpoint, it’s the sweet bleeding state of the Art.
