Naturally it does; it must. Critics want to hear that the album they’re about to listen to is new, bold, unprecedented. So, anyhow, the authors of one-sheets seem to think. A few listenings to Nihility at very high volume provides a timely reminder that what’s good isn’t necessarily what’s newest, and that known quantities (such as, for instance, the Timeless and Undying Greatness of Death Metal, the Noblest Musical Endeavor Yet Undertaken by Man) are as worthy of investigation as unknowns. Decapitated is a known quantity from Poland that provides crater-producing jolts of their known quality. Does this mean that Decapitated are the James Taylor of death metal? That Nihility is their Gorilla? That somewhere in Lwow there’s a Carly Rozewicz waiting to stoke their muse? Aw, Christ. Forget I said anything. Just go buy Nihility and sing “Fire and Rain” over the instrumental parts in “Spheres of Madness.” You will thank me later.
