The first thing I put on the iPod was either The Natural
Bridge by the Silver Jews or The Walls Ablaze by
Sarah Dougher; I was going to make a point of remembering which
one it was, and more specifically I was going to be sure and
give The Walls Ablaze the nod because it's so fantastically
great, but all that was rather a long time ago now and, what's
more, I am somewhat delirious from hunger. Whichever, it doesn't
matter: both are pretty easy to categorize. "Indie." One could
get real butterfly-collector about it if one so desired: are
Berman and Dougher really very similar at all? Well, no, they're
not; the indie production pre-sets are similar (hands-off, let
the music speak for itself, etc.), but beyond that there are
more differences than points of comparison. But I was feeling
pretty ruthless, because I knew from the second I dragged ten
songs from the iTunes playlist onto the iPod icon that I had
a busy day ahead of me. No time to split hairs. |
