God bless Jason Loewenstein for knowing
the answer, which is Just do what the muse tells you and quit
asking stupid questions. A real artist makes what he feels like
he ought to make. Describing this urge to create as the muse
is somewhat precious, of course, so call it what you like -- whatever
your terms, theres no question that lots of people have publicly
tried to pretend that they felt called or compelled to create art
for which they patently had no gift whatever, and have wound up looking
stupid in the process. Loewensteins newest, At Sixes and
Sevens, does exactly what it wants to do, and succeeds beautifully,
sounding at once dated, unfashionable, and utterly compelling. |
