There are only so many ways you can say
“brutal” before you have to hit Roget’s, and since
we’re opposed to thesauri in principle if not always in practice
here at Last Plane to Jakarta, it’s gotten to the point
where a metal record has to do something really special before we
feel like putting the effort into writing about it. There’ve
been plenty of great metal records this year, really an embarrassment
of them: High on Fire’s Surrounded by Thieves; Immortal’s
Sons of Northern Darkness; Blasterpiece Theater by December
Wolves (which we may yet get around to writing about, if it continues
to flex its stranglehold on the in-play pile); Arch Enemy’s
Wages of Sin and the new Sentenced album; metalcore wonderkids
December with their hypnotic The Lament Configuration; the
new Annihilatus album on Northern Heritage. Wasn’t that new
Decapitated album just earlier this year, too? Jeez.
