Even on such a list, though, the new Mastodon
album sticks out, because one listen through from beginning to end
leave little doubt about what Mastodon are trying to do. It’s
novel, it’s daring, it’s so old it’s new. It’s
charmingly anachronistic and it’s totally timeless, unless you’ve
gotten so cynical that all grand efforts all strike you as pathetic.
They’re trying to make an album that’s better as a
whole piece than it is as a collection of songs. They have succeeded
in this effort. Wherefore I feel justified in saying that Mastodon
are so beautiful I could cry.
