What this means to you and me is that there’s usually a saxophone someplace goin’ squeak-skronk-blaap-blaap, and plenty of high volume to go around. Which is great. Glenn Branca’s armies-of-guitars have stuff out on Atavistic; the label’s reissued a bunch of way-out-there early seventies jazz; they’ve also reissued a hell of a lot of Lydia Lunch. Whatever your take on these people (I like Branca; I like the seventies jazz occasionally and in reasonable doses; you can keep the Lunch), Atavistic is a label with an identifiable aesthetic stance, which is a fairly priceless quality in these market-driven times.
