What I’ve got, and what I can give
you, is a first dry reading of an album which I predict will spend
a whole lot of time in the CD player out on tour over the next two
weeks. That first reading reveals a band who’ve practiced a
lot but who make sure not to let on that it’s hard work, and
who can’t quite decide between restraint and abandon, which
tension makes for very exciting listening. They tap the better aspects
of eighties revivalism (knowledge of dub tropes as they pertain to
herky-jerky rock music being the first & most important quality
here) and get into some mild Stones fetishism, especially on the vocals.
There’s a generally volatile feeling at work. There’s
a little piano that sounds kinda frightening and there are some really
tweaked guitars. If you want a reference point from recent days, I’d
say think Enon, which ought to be enough to send you off to http://www.selfstarterfoundation.com
as fast as your mouse can carry you, because that Enon record was
one of the coolest rock records of the past twelve months. Most of
all though there’s the way that We Ragazzi’s got this
incredible nerve: they are like a small town that thinks it’s
a big city, all flashy gesture & quick wit. |
