so what you do is you get a couple of bathwaters under your belt and then you throw in Music to Play in the Dark, Vol. 1, and what do you hear? strings. only they’re not strings properly-so-called: they’re audibly synth-strings, inducing a sort of romantic nausea for a little over a minute. the song you’re hearing is called “Are You Shivering?” and then first thing it does after making you queasy is to invoke the spirit of a 100-preset Casio keyboard circa 1989, which it does by using a rhythmic sequence of tones using the “human voice” sound. strings, human voice preset, and a synthetic Angklung rhythm background: what have we got? sheer, magnificent discomfort.
