A lot of the metal albums we write about here are of the sort where we probably ought to offer caveats by the bushelful, warnings like “what most people mean by ‘heavy metal’ is Peabo Bryson next to this stuff” or “if you haven’t already heard of this album, it’ll probably take a considerable amount of time and effort before you find that you can’t live without it.” We probably ought to offer such notices, though we don’t, because one of our strongest convictions is that there are few experiences richer than that of confronting music that provokes, confuses, enrages, or disturbs the listener. (Our other strongest conviction is that there’s nothing wrong with just wanting to listen to music that soothes, pacifies, comforts, or unburdens the listener of unnecessary tension or stress, and that people who find fault with such music are insufferable bores.) In the case of the new Dark Tranquillity, however, we are able to say without hesitation that this album will rock you until your ass falls off.
