But at the same time,
funny all by itself doesn’t necessarily make for good listening,
and that’s where Ghoul really makes the jump from “interesting”
toward “essential.” Every song on We Came for the Dead!!!
is jawcrackingly great staple-food heavy metal: not terrifically groundbreaking,
but completely headbangable stuff. The guitar solos know their history
and recall great Ozzy moments without worshipping at the Randy Rhodes
altar, and the beats whisper “Bay Area Thrash” without making
too much of a scene about it. The distortion pedal pays for itself
inside of the first five minutes.
