God bless Snoop Doggy Dogg
and all who follow his path. I was just sitting here, using this
Gateway Solo laptop at my friend Peter’s house in Rochester,
New York, five paragraphs deep into a piece that was going to build
a case for calling rappers/emcees "singers," when the ninth
track on From the Chuuuch to the Palace came on. I looked
up from what I was doing, because I recognized the bass line: it
was "Paid in Full," or whatever bass line Eric B sampled
for "Paid in Full" back in 1985 or thereabouts. I started
nodding my head because that’s what we corny white guys do
when we hear "Paid In Full." (I use the word "corny," by
the way, in tribute to my friend Ethan, who unless I read him wrong
believes it is corny to like any pre-’91 hip-hop: or who believes,
anyhow, that most of the people who are always championing eighties
hip-hop are deeply corny people.) |
